I bought 7 grams of magic mushrooms with my girlfriend at the time. We were eager to try them out. She had eaten magic mushrooms once before and had a great time. It was my first experience with psychedelics since smoking salvia in high school and I was a bit nervous.
It was around 9pm when we split the magic mushrooms and each ate half. Within an hour, I felt the effects of the shrooms. We were listening to music on YouTube when I noticed everything on my computer screen shaking and distorting. It seemed as though the colours were jumping out of the screen and dancing right in front of my face. I smiled and laughed uncontrollably as a feeling of ecstasy washed over me. I felt like all of my troubles vanished and were replaced by pure joy.
I looked around my apartment and watched my posters warp and dance across the walls. Once I finished enjoying the show that my walls put on for me, I decided that I wanted to go outside and smoke some weed. At this point, weed wasn’t legal and my go-to spot to smoke was a nearby park.
We ventured into the park and I decided to use my bong next to a large bush. As I approached the bush, I heard a man yell at me.
“Get the fuck out of here!”
A wave of fear consumed me. “I’m sorry, I’m just trying to smoke weed!” I shouted back in a scared voice.
The man continued to yell unintelligibly as I backed away from the bush.
Suddenly, I heard the sizzling of a fuse and before I knew it, colourful fireworks were being shot in my direction. I screamed at him to stop as we frantically escaped. When we got back to my apartment, I felt dizzy and afraid.
We started an episode of Adventure Time in an attempt to calm down. I decided to use my bong inside and blow the smoke out of my balcony door. Anytime I smoked inside, I would always hold the smoke in for the count of one minute in an attempt to minimize the smoke I blew out. As I held in the smoke, a trippy, auto-tuned song began to play on the show. The song made my stomach churn and I could no longer hold in the smoke. As I exhaled, vomit flowed from my mouth and all over myself and my chair.
My girlfriend looked at me in horror as I pleaded for her to turn off the show. My vomit quickly changed from warm to freezing cold and I felt trapped in my chair.
Somehow, I managed to un-trap myself. I took a shower, changed my clothes, and put my chair out on the balcony.
It took me a long time to try magic mushrooms for a second time, but now I consider this trip as a lesson in the importance of set and setting. Having fireworks shot at you the dark is not an ideal setting for a psychedelic trip.
